Protecting Police Officers More Important Than Helping Political Donors, Group Says:

Washington, D.C. - Congress should not put the lives of law enforcement officials at risk to benefit its trial lawyer contributors, says Deneen Borelli of the national black group Project 21.

Congress is now considering overturning the Tiahrt Amendment, a measure that restricts certain gun data from being shared outside of the law enforcement community. Project 21 members are opposing any action that allows trial lawyers, politicians, criminals and others from accessing federal gun trace information.

 Cuyahoga GOP Platform tabled
On Wednesday, July 25th the Republican Party of Cuyahoga County met to consider a county party platform.

The platform was critisized both for what it included, as well as for what it did not.

With controversial items, such as abolishing the Cuyahoga County Commission, down-sizing Cleveland City Council and nominal support for gun control under municipal home-rule, but not addressing social issues such as the right-to-life and school choice the platform raised the ire of many.

After mailing by the Buckeye Firearms Association blasting the platform plank, the gun control reference was removed, as were other items such as residency requirements and traffic-light cameras.

Discussion also centered policies on OPERS retirement, education reform, regionalism and City of Cleveland Council Ward apportionment.

As the debate reached the scheduled two-hour mark, only about one-third of the platform was discussed.  A motion carried tabling the platform until the next meeting or the Central & Executive Committees.

Bedford Central Committee member Ralph King has written on the meeting at his blog, King's Rite Site

Bennett criticizes Board of Elections hire

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections was required to hire a Republican to fill the assistant director's seat since a Democrat, Jane Platten, is the director. The Board chose Pat McDonald, a registered Republican who recently worked in the Ohio treasurer's office. But Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett sees a Democrat in Republican's clothing.

"Pat McDonald is a political opportunist," Bennett wrote in a statement released after the hiring. "He conveniently switched his political affiliation in the past and publicly supported Democrats for statewide office last year."

Mr. Bennett stated that Ohio State Senator Bob Spada and former Secretary of State Ken Blackwell's Director of Elections Dana Walch had better qualifications.

New Board of Election Chairman, Jeff Hastings, a Republican  has noted that the search committee, appointed at the Board of Elections Chairman Bennett's direction, did not select Sen. Spada nor Walch as finalists for the Deputy Director job, effectively tying the hands of the new board.

The lopsided partisan makeup of the search committee, seven Democrats to two Republicans, raised concerns with many local Republicans, but at the time Bennnett insisted the committee makeup was appropriate.

Tancredo says vote highlights GOP rift with Bush

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) believes the voice-vote passage of an amendment that would essentially force two former Border Patrol agents to be released from prison amounts to a "seismic shift" in the immigration debate and shows that conservatives have broken with the White House.

"I think it's enormously significant," Tancredo, who is running for president, told The Hill. "It's an indication of the progress that has been made on this entire front of immigration."

Ohio Conservative Blogs: More Than Just Right
When it comes to politics, media can often boil the discourse down to a battle between left and right. Where Ohio's right-leaning blogs are concerned, though, each Republican has a voice all their own. OR

Commissioners Raise Taxes without Vote
The Cuyahoga County Commsiioners voted 2-1, to raise county sales taxes without a vote of the public.

Liberal Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones was the only holdout, stating he favors bringing the tax question to the electorate.  Fellow Democrats Jimmy Dimora and Tim Hagan voted to impliment the increase without going to the ballot.

Non-partisan coalitions are being formed to force the increase onto the ballot.  Updates will be posted at Big World Blog as this story develops.
